Aalto University part of the FIRE -infrastructure

Aalto University is a part of the Finnish Infrastructure for Register-based Research (FIRE) project, which is a remote access application service and training infrastructure for conducting register-based research in Finland. FIRE builds on Statistics Finland's existing remote access system, FIONA, and the future service will provide an improved computing environment and a register-data catalogue.

FIRE promotes the construction of novel research datasets and register-based research projects, provides support on research ethics, and provides training for future register data specialists. FIRE’s development and implementation is being funded by the Research Council of Finland during 2025-2028.

The FIRE project organizes different kinds of events. The first Education and training -workshop will be held in Jyväskylä on Friday, November 21st 2025, at 12.00-15.45. More information on the workshop can be found here. Registration for the workshop ends on November 11th and the event is free to attend.

Our goal is to create the world’s best remote access environment for register-based research, develop usable register datasets, improve metadata, and train top-level register researchers.

Professor Jani Erola, leader of the FIRE consortium

Other consortium members alongside Aalto University are University of Turku, University of Jyväskylä, Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland, University of Helsinki, Statistics Finland, and VATT. External members include LUT University, The National Archives of Finland, and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. More information on the project can be found here
